Why we love and service Milford, and its history: Milford is a town in Massachusetts that sits 10 miles southwest of Framingham and 27 south-southwest of Boston. Milford is conveniently located inside the Boston metropolitan area, so it's easy to access transportation hubs such as Logan International Airport or Fenway Park via public transit from this location.
Milford was first settled in 1662, but it wasn't until 1780 that the town became known as Milford. During the 19th century, industrialization brought upon by its unique location on two rivers - Charles River and Blackstone Rivers watersheds- experienced a boom of growth which contributed to quarrying for pink granite quarries now referred to as "Milford Pink."
The History of Milford, MA In 1662, a land title from the Indians regarding an eight-mile field of property in Mendon was signed by Weymouth, Peter Brackett, and Moses Payne. The land was said to be bought at 24 pounds of silver from the Nipmuck Indians. During that time, the Nipmuck Indians were known as the Quinshipaug Plantation.
During the same year, most villagers and settlers used to cut down trees. The logs were what made their homes, and they cleared the entire eight-mile property for farming. People were raising livestock, and farming was their only job at that moment.
In 1676, King Philip War ambushed the land. Every dwelling place in the property was burned and destroyed. About six inhabitants were killed, which led the people to fear the king's men. Eventually, the villagers abandoned their wrecked land and went on to a different place to start anew.
The Return to Mendon in 1680
People returned to the Mendon in 1680, and they helped settle a dense wilderness with their strong religious beliefs. The people who came back to the Mendon in 1680 were solid and spiritual folks with a positive outlook on life. We are told that they enjoyed their lives as homesteaders and lived happily in the meantime.
An additional 3-mile piece of land was bought with 3-pounds of silver as an extension to the town. The new land was bought in 1691 and called the North Purchase. The street leading to it became known as Purchase Street for obvious reasons.
In 1639, Captain Seth Chapin and Elder John Jones were the first to settle on land that would become Milford. The town's now called Main Street was initially called Sherborn Road during that time. Many of the oldest homes are in North Purchase, and it was far to travel from Mendon for Sunday worship. Therefore, the people of Milford petitioned to have their town and Church separate from Mendon.
In 1741 the Milford Second Congregational Church was granted permission to have their Church known as "The Easterly Precinct." Finally, in 1780, they were officially incorporated into a town with our current First Congregational Church.
The Town Hall was built in 1819 and became the Town House School before it burned down. The present town hall, made of brick to withstand fire damage, was constructed by Thomas Silloway in 1854. Robert Allen Cook skillfully carried out the same design as the front of the building for an addition added in 1900.
Memorial Hall was built as a memorial to Civil War Veterans in 1884. It housed the library for 100 years on the first floor while both second and third floors were used by The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and later American Legion, which is their wish to have living memorials. Hopedale residents petitioned the General Court of Boston to become a separate town, and in 1886 it was granted. Rev. Adin Ballou, George Draper, and General William F. Draper requested this change for Hopedale's sake.
Hopedale was initially a religious society, so the streets in Hopedale are named after virtues that reflect this: Peace Street, Chapel, Union, Social, and Freedom Street. The Shoe Industry in the 19th century In the 19th century, farming was still a typical way of life for families. However, industries became an option when Colonel Ariel Bragg learned about shoes and sold them out of his saddlebag. Eventually, he hired helpers and put up a small shop near his home in the Braggville section of town.
The Milford Shoe Company, founded in 1908 and dissolved in 2013, once held the title of "largest shoe manufacturer on earth." The industry came to be known as 'boot hill' during this time. The company has grown to be one of the largest shoe manufacturers in New England. More than eleven shops were located near Central, North Bow, and Depot Street throughout its history until 1981, when it moved out. At that time, Milford was producing more boots and shoes than any other town locally or nationally; this gave rise to names such as Claflin & Thayer (later called Bickford), Porter Shoe Co., Regal Shoes, just a few from the past which is still remembered today by some old-timers who worked there earlier on.
The Granite Industry In 1860, Milford pink granite was discovered, and the business of quarried stone boomed in a few decades. By 1900 over 1,000 men worked in this industry that shipped across the country in buildings, monuments, and bridges.
Because Milford pink granite was sought after, you would find it in Milford and Hopedale and Washington, New York, Ohio, etc., and Paris, France. You could also get a job at Spaulding Straw Shop Kartiganer's or Lish Brothers, where men and women were hired to work. The Draper Corporation in Hopedale was the largest employer for many years, employing up to 6,000 people. Since 1914, Archer Rubber Company has been running round-the-clock making foul weather outerwear for soldiers during World War II and is still going strong today with over 100 years under their belt.
In 1822, William Godfrey brought the first stagecoach to town. By 1848, a train arrived in Milford and enabled it to transport boots, shoes, and granite stones to significant cities. The electric car was popular in 1891, and the North Purchase Transportation Company started ferrying people to Draper's Way. In 1915, the Johnson Bus line brought customers from Framingham and Worcester coming from Lincoln Square until 1986.
Hotels in Milford The Milford of today has a diverse population that includes many different nationalities and cultures. There are still several hotels in town: the Mansion House, Lincoln House, Milford Hotel, Rockingham Hotel, Willian hotel, Manion hotel. The Walker Shoe Shop on West Street became an apartment building when it closed its doors. In 1914, a massive fire occurred there, where nine Armenian immigrants died.
Schools in Milford The Milford Public School system has undergone many changes over the years. In earlier times, the school was taught in neighborhood buildings and supported by nearby residents who maintained the building and paid teachers' salaries until district schools came along that were under town jurisdiction. As a result of these changes, most of our old neighborhood schools are no longer around today as they have been replaced with centralized ones now run by Milford Public Schools
Milford's public school system is constantly changing to adapt to new situations or circumstances. Older community-run elementary schools within neighborhoods have since disappeared amidst shifting policies.
The North Purchase District School, built in 1832 and still standing today, has dramatically influenced many educators and scholars. The schools in town are second to none in Milford for their quality education that provides an extensive backdrop of knowledge from which students can learn. In addition, the Milford National Bank and the Federal Savings Bank opened in the early 1800s, having a powerful influence on the town's industrial and commercial development.

Motorcycle Transportation
Motorcycle towing can be intimidating that you would need a very dependable tow company. If you need to have a motorcycle transported you cannot simply use a traditional style tow truck or truck motorcycle. Traditional tow trucks require the rear wheels of a four-wheel vehicle to be on the ground throughout the whole transportation process. For obvious reasons, this will not work with a two-wheeled motorcycle. A flatbed tow truck is your best solution for all of your motorcycle transportation needs. Our team has provided flat-bed motorcycle transportation services hundreds of times throughout our course of business.
We have the experience and knowledge required to ensure your bike is transported safely and efficiently. Contact our team today for motorcycle duty tow or visit our site for more information.
While traditional towing is relatively safe for vehicles, some customers elect to go the extra mile by employing our flatbed tow truck services to safely transport their high end or special vehicle, after all, it's more worthy to spend more than to compromise your vehicle's safety by hiring a light-duty tow truck. This is a safer option for your vehicle as it does not have to be dragged behind the tow truck. There are many advantages to this. Your vehicle won’t be subject to the debris that can be flung up by the tow truck in front of it. The vehicle also won’t have unnecessary weight placed on the rear wheels and suspension system. Many customers choose this and for good reason.
Choose Precision Towing Framingham for roadside assist or roadside rescue, heavy-duty towing, light-duty towing, and truck towing. We promise it's all worth it!
